Professional registration

Professional registration recognises your skills and experience and demonstrates your commitment to professionalism.

The Engineering Council (ECUK) maintains a register of professional engineers, and awards the titles:

The Engineering Council (UK) licenses the Institution of Engineering and Technology to assess applicants on its behalf. The IET registers more engineers each year than any other institution in the UK, and approaching half the engineers on the Engineering Council’s register are IET members.

The IET operates a four stage application process for professional registration. The left hand menu will guide you through an overview of the application process, show you how it works and what you should expect. You will also find information about each category of professional registration with a characterisation and full information on the EC(UK) competence criteria plus examples of some recently registered members. Comprehensive guides on each category of registration are available to download on the relevant category pages.

When you have read all this information carefully, should you have any specific questions about your application (either before or after submission) you will be directed to appropriate further sources of information and guidance.

While reading through these pages please remember, all judgements and decisions about an application are made by peer review. If you have queries based on judgement (such as the suitability of examples) you are advised to contact a professional registration advisor who will be able to offer peer advice. IET staff will be able to help you understand the purpose of the application form, and answer queries about supporting evidence (process related queries).
