Electrician Competence Recognition

Working collaboratively with experts and other partner organisations who operate with or within the electrical sector, including The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (launched Nov 2014) where relevant, the IET will identify principal work streams enabled through a range of tasks and initiatives that align to the individual competence recognition of electricians.

The following list of work streams is either completed or in progress.

IET-BCA Guidance for Local Building Control Bodies: Electrical Installation Qualifications and Competence (within England and Wales)

The purpose of this new peer-reviewed Guidance document is to outline the skills and competencies required for an individual to carry out electrical installation work within dwellings in England and Wales.  Specifically, work that falls under the remit of Part P of the Building Regulations and referred to in Approved Document P.

An individual’s competence level or skills are afforded a risk rating, explanation and action outcome within the Guidance document. These may then be used to calculate if any additional work may need to be taken into account by a local Building Control Body (BCB).

Within the Guidance document:

  • The level of recognised competence is specific to the level an individual has reached, having been assessed against national guidelines and/or professional criteria.
  • The competence rating is applied to reflect a recognised level an individual has reached within the industry including their experience and qualifications.
