An open letter to Ofcom on the need to urgently review how VR spaces are governed

However, we have also been diligently campaigning to stress the importance of tackling the risks that it can pose to vulnerable users, particularly children.

The nature of this technology is enabling new forms of abuse at a rapid pace that must be addressed sooner rather than later.

It was confirmed as the Online Safety Bill passed through the House of Lords that governance of the metaverse is firmly within the scope of the Act.

Therefore, we believe that the best way to minimise risks and protect users is for Ofcom to undertake an urgent review of how VR spaces are governed.

The reports in the media this week demonstrate the urgency of Ofcom undertaking this review as a priority for 2024.

The IET has today written to Ofcom to offer its support and the guidance of the engineering and technology profession in tackling this important matter.
