Introducing The IET Bookshelf

The IET Bookshelf is a virtual STEM book club that aims to direct people to compelling and thought-provoking reads that focus on themes of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The IET Bookshelf will launch this month with a new author and book featuring every six weeks. Running as a YouTube series, the IET will be chatting to authors about their books with each episode ending with a live Q&A session with a virtual audience.

There is a dedicated area on our website for the book club, with a list of recommended books and access to all of the YouTube episodes.

Upcoming episodes

Brian David Johnson, The Future You

Futurist and Science lover, Brian David Johnson will be kicking off the series with his book The Future You: Break Through the Fear and Build the Life You Want. Brian’s book gives readers the tools they need to envision and create the future they want. He has spent much of his life and career thinking about the future, what’s coming, and how to make the future better.

Femi Fadugba, The Upper World

Femi Fadugba’s sci-fi thriller explores London gang culture. The book was inspired by Femi’s own experiences of holding a Quantum Physics Masters, juxtaposed with living on a London estate. Extending the themes of the novel, Femi will join us to discuss free will verses destiny, the physics of time-travel, and the fight for a better future.

The Upper World is being adapted for film by Netflix, starring Academy Award winner Daniel Kaluuya and Femi will speak about what this success has been like.

Lewis Dartnell, The Knowledge

Professor of Science Communication, Lewis Dartnell, will be talking about his latest book, The Knowledge: how to rebuild our world from scratch. Lewis looks at the history of science and technology, explaining how survivors can realistically survive and ultimately revive society.

Lewis has authored several books and regularly freelances for newspapers and magazine articles. He has appeared in several science programmes for BBC radio and television, including presenting at TED in 2015 and making guest appearances on The Sky at Night and Stargazing Live.
