Decarbonising the power sector (2023)

The Government’s Net Zero Strategy published in October 2021 aims to decarbonise the power system by 2035 and more recent geo-political events have highlighted the need for a clearer focus on the security of the nation’s energy supplies.

Unsurprisingly, a decarbonised electricity system will play a major part in the transition to net zero, reducing the dependence on imported fuels, but also increasing the reliance on power availability and security which is currently provided in some measure by natural gas.

The IET Energy Panel have produced a consultation response to UK Parliament outlining:

  • Strategic planning
  • Whole system thinking
  • Operability measures
  • Avoiding higher costs and missed targets
  • Longer term innovations
  • Integrations of power systems and fuels
  • Meeting the need
  • Future action
