Enabling a national cyber physical infrastructure to catalyse innovation (2022)

The IET welcomes the opportunity to comment on a consultation from The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on ‘Enabling a National Cyber Physical Infrastructure to Catalyse Innovation

Our response describes The Apollo Protocol project and how it will and/or does address the following consultation questions in a cross-sector way

  • Opportunities for cyber-physical systems
  • Barriers and risks to developing and adopting cyber-physical systems
  • Value in shared building blocks
  • Role in government, industry, academia etc in developing shared building blocks
  • Skills requirements
  • Skills accessibility
  • Connected cyber-physical systems
  • Value and risks of data sharing
  • Barriers to interoperability
  • Data access needs
  • Role in government, industry, academia in connection/interoperability

The Apollo Protocol project is a collaborative project between various stakeholders and currently the manufacturing and built environment sectors are developing their concept of digital twin separately.

Working together on this and against current challenges with net zero and sustainability means we can collaborate to meet these challenges and influence the development of cyber-physical systems and national digital twin policies.

This collaboration can achieve:

  • Understanding true performance
  • Opening up sustainable growth

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the benefits of connecting manufacturing and built environment sectors, supported by the technology sector.

This response is a high-level summary of the Apollo Protocol – a detailed version will be published soon.
