IET’s Engineering Open House Day 2021 is going virtual

On Friday 23 July, engineering and technology companies across the UK, and internationally, will come together with the IET to host a range of interactive online activities geared to inspire young people about the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

Now in its sixth year, Engineering Open House Day (EOHD) aims to help children aged 5-16 year-olds and their parents understand what it’s like to work as an engineer or technologist by giving exclusive behind the scenes access to a huge range of organisations to demonstrate the breadth of creative and innovative careers on offer.

Families will be able to watch and join in with a whole range of interactive videos and demonstrations on the day, including an online magazine show where presenters will link through to events happening across the UK hosted on the IET’s Engineer a Better World website.

David Lakin, IET Head of Education and Safeguarding, said: It’s important to us that we are still able to inspire children and their parents about careers in engineering and technology despite organisations not being able to physically open their doors for Engineering Open House Day, like previous years.

“A virtual event will still provide an excellent springboard for families to explore the sheer scope of exciting opportunities that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths present.

“We hope through hosting the event virtually we will be able to reach and inspire more children and provide an exciting event for families to look forward to at the start of the UK school summer holiday.”

Engineering Open House Day is a key event in the Engineer a Better World campaign, which aims to inspire tomorrow’s engineers, challenge engineering stereotypes and support parents and young people in understanding what careers are available in engineering and technology.
