The IET welcomes the Government’s commitment to a fast and reliable broadband infrastructure

Chris Cartwright, Chair of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Digital Panel, commented:

“A national commitment to a fast and reliable broadband infrastructure for all is positive news, particularly that ‘good progress towards this target, with around 1 in 3 UK premises now able to access a gigabit-capable connection*’ is being cited in parliament. It’s also welcomed that the Government will be investing £5 billion through the UK Gigabit Programme.

“With a majority of UK workers now working from home and most school-learning taking place at home, high capacity broadband is becoming essential.

“However, it would be useful for the Government to provide a timeline as to when every house in the UK should expect high capacity broadband. We would also like to see a commitment that investment is focused on supporting the greatest in need.

“The IET will continue to engage with Government about the rollout, broadband speed and capacity and the need for a targeted, needs-based approach. We are working with other institutions to examine future technological and economical needs and the impact this will have on both the 5G and 6G digital infrastructure.”
