IET comments on Rishi Sunak's latest HS2 announcement

Commenting on Rishi Sunak’s announcement that he is axing the HS2 northern leg, Jeremy Acklam, Transport Expert at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), said: “It is with mixed feelings that we hear about the cancellation of the northern leg of HS2.

While this decision represents a significant shift in our country’s future transportation plans, it also presents an opportunity to re-evaluate how funding is allocated.

“Looking at the task of allocating strategic investments in the North to support more rapid economic and technological growth than can be delivered by physical infrastructure, it is crucial that a substantial portion of these funds is directed towards the accelerated deployment of digital infrastructure.

This includes initiatives to expand broadband access and fortify 5G networks, thereby enhancing digital connectivity across the Northern region. A little more time can then be spent confirming a region-wide strategy for upgrades to transport infrastructure of all modes and services.

“Furthermore, investing in skills training programs is essential to ensure that businesses, regardless of their size, can effectively adopt and leverage emerging digital technologies including remote digital working.

We believe that a targeted and flexible approach is essential as we navigate this new phase, aiming to drive prosperity and technological advancement in the North in the absence of the northern leg of HS2.”
