Qualifications
Ideally, you’ll have:
- UK Foundation degree
- UK HNC/HND
- UK National Diploma
- UK Advanced Modern Apprenticeship
- City & Guilds Higher Professional Diploma in Engineering
- City & Guilds 236/2360 parts, 1, 2 and C (electrical installation or similar)
- Level 3 in UK National Qualification Framework (NQF)
- Level 6 in the Scottish Qualifications and Credit Framework (SQCF)
- Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Gold Card
If you do not have any of the above qualifications, please send us a current detailed CV so we can assess your application based on your work experience
Experience
You should have experience of working as a Technician, some examples of suitable roles* would include:
- Service Engineer
- Electronics instructor
- Repair and routine maintenance activity
- Fault diagnosis and rectification
- Diagnostic testing using defined procedures
- Supervisor or site supervision of craftsmen or tradesmen
- Installation and maintenance electrician, or electrical contractor
- Inspection
- Sole trader
- Design and installation of small-scale domestic layouts
- Completing a work-based learning route approved by a licensed professional engineering institution
- Completing a recognised technician apprenticeship accredited by an industry association or major employer, or
- Completing a monitored training programme which has achieved recognised standards, assessed by a qualified professional engineer or body.

What to do if you don’t have the qualifications
Don’t worry! You’ll need to give us a bit more information so we can assess your experience and you’ll need to ask a supporter to co-sign your application and complete the supporter inquiry form below.
Your supporter will need to confirm that you’ve got the knowledge you need to be a member of the IET, so you should ask someone close to you professionally like your employer, another member of the IET or someone else who knows you in a work capacity. If you don’t think you’ll be able to find someone suitable to support your application, contact us for advice on the best way to proceed.
What happens when you join?
Once your application has been approved, it’s time to celebrate and start using your designatory letters (MIET or TMIET) after your name. Add them to your CV and your professional profiles to make sure that your job applications stand out and your skills are recognised by your current and future employers.
