Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – How we upcycled over 43 tonnes of furniture

Working with Spacecraft – a leading furniture dealership – the previous MFH furniture has been given a new lease of life within schools, clubs and organisations who were in need.

In fact, over 43 tonnes of our furniture have been upcycled and reused. From the chairs and tables in our Edison’s canteen to the IET executive desks and sofas, to the brightly coloured chairs, our used furniture has been rehoused across the country.

We were able to help Davenant Foundation School, Woodford Green Athletics Club and Essex Ladies, St Thomas of Canterbury Church, and DBear – a new start-up company in Amersham.

With the help from Spacecraft, we replaced 25-year-old desks for the headteacher and admin staff at Davenant Foundation School, provided over 90 desks to a start-up company when money is on a tight budget and gave around 40 chairs to a church who needed to pay for roofing repairs.

We not only had minimal waste go to landfill but we were able to provide a brighter future for these organisations.

Mr Thorne, Headteacher at Davenant Foundation School said, “thank you for brightening up our school, I have many happy children because of this injection of quality and exciting furniture.”

Rehousing our furniture has taken the strain off organisations who rely on volunteers like Woodford Green Athletics Club and Essex Ladies. The club’s president, Cowsi Magol said, “It will certainly be useful and will replace some of the old furniture we have. This is recycling at its best.”

Once we had donated all furniture to those in need, Spacecraft separated the wood and metal to recycle what was left – over 84 tonnes!

As a result, minimal waste went to landfill, and we had achieved the sustainable removal of all the furniture at our office.
