Postgraduate Research winners - where are they now?

Recently we’ve caught up with some of our previous award winners to find out what they are doing now…
Una Davies 2020 winner
“I was honoured to receive an IET Postgraduate Prize last year and even though we were not able to hold a physical awards ceremony due to the pandemic, it was great to celebrate virtually with the IET and recognise the amazing achievements of so many young engineers.
Since winning the award I have secured a postdoctoral position at UW Madison in the USA, where I will be working in one of the foremost nuclear engineering departments in the country.
My research there will focus on advanced reactors, in particular small modular reactors, and the possibilities for combining nuclear power with renewable energy sources.”
Richard Taylor 2014 winner
“Back in 2014, I was fortunate enough to be awarded an IET postgraduate scholarship award, for my PhD work on photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs). Little did I know then but that award would be hugely impactful in some great personal and technical achievements down the line.
Since receiving the award I have been able to continue working on PCSELs, and the technology has developed to a point where I have spun-out a company, Vector Photonics, and we are commercialising the technology.
Recognition from the IET has been a key asset for us and we owe much of our success to the credibility which comes with the IET recognition we received from this award.”
