Get your children involved in our IET 150: My Sustainable Community Competition

It is safe to say that sustainability and climate change are on everybody’s agenda and while us adults are now trying our best to do our bit for the planet, the main driving force behind the future is our younger generation.

And to help encourage these future difference makers, we have created the IET 150 Sustainability Community competition in partnership with Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW), where we are asking young people to consider their community response to sustainability and climate change, all while having fun!

So, if you have any mini eco-warriors at home, between the ages of 7-14, who want to be involved then here is the challenge.

We want them to design and build a sustainable community, like where they live now, but right from the very beginning – a blank canvas!

The only thing it should include is 150 homes for people within the community to live in but then the rest is up to them, keeping in mind the sustainability of their community.

They will need to think about everything from providing shelter and water, to heating and food sources, to the community’s economy and jobs for the people, to schools and doctors. So, let their eco-minds get creative and invent the community of the future.

And they can make their own sustainability community on their own or if they want to get their friends involved, they can enter as a small group of up to 10 people, or a large group with over 10 people. Sometimes more heads are better than one!

There will also be two classes for each category – Class 1 (ages 7-10) and Class 2 (ages 11-14).

The deadline for our Sustainable Community Project is not until Friday, 28 January 2022 so why not get creating with them at home at the weekend or recommend to their school.

You could even visit some other communities to get some inspiration? All in the name of research, of course!

And don’t worry, there will be prizes to be won for the most innovation and sustainable community made.  Keep your eyes peeled for updates on the website to find out what is up for grabs.
