In memory of Francis Fung CEng FIET

It is with great sorrow that the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Hong Kong announces the passing away of its Past Chairman (Session 2015/2016), Mr. Francis Fung, on Thursday, 8 April 2021, at the age of 63 years.

Mr. Francis Fung had devoted his whole professional career to the electric utility and contributed to the development of electricity generation in Hong Kong. He has been working at CLP Hong Kong for over three decades from his graduation from university until his retirement in 2018.

He contributed greatly to various projects within CLP, including power generation, transmission and distribution, renewable energy and natural gas projects.

Mr Francis Fung joined the IET Hong Kong Branch Committee in 2011, and then took up the role of Honorary Treasurer from 2012 to 2014.

He became the Vice-Chairman in 2014 and was elected as the Chairman for the Session 2015-2016.

During his tenure as Chairman, he worked successfully to promote excellence in the operation of IET Hong Kong and its members.

Through his leadership, IET Hong Kong was awarded the Most Operationally Excellent Global Network and Most Operationally Excellent Regional Network by IET Headquarters.

He was a Chartered Engineer, as well as a Fellow of IET and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Mr Francis Fung was also a dedicated mentor who regularly contributed to activities that nurtured young talents in the fields of engineering.

He was a mentor of the IET Hong Kong and CLP mentorship programmes, providing guidance to students and young engineers on their career development to becoming professional engineers.

Mr Francis Fung was an Industrial Advisor at the City University of Hong Kong, Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management for over 15 years.

He acted as a bridge between academia and industry, advising university programme leaders on the content of their programme and courses to improve the quality and calibre of students, and prepare them as best as possible for the rigours of the industry.

He also provided guidance to programme leaders and students pursuing Professional Registration.

Mr Francis Fung’s devotion to mentoring engineers did not end with his retirement in 2018.

In fact, he attended training in the UK to become a qualified Professional Registration Advisor (PRA) and Professional Review Interviewer (PRI) and regularly contributed advice to IET members since 2019.

In addition to caring about young engineers, Mr Francis Fung also devoted his time to the less privileged.

He played an active role at Mary Rose School for over two decades, acting as a member of the School Management Committee and Honorary Secretary.

The school strives to provide the best learning environment and quality education to intellectually challenged children.

IET Hong Kong is indebted to Mr Francis Fung’s service to the Branch, his contribution to nurturing young talents in the engineering profession, and the development of electricity generation in Hong Kong.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to his family. He will be remembered by all members of IET Hong Kong.

May he rest in peace.
