Our involvement with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

It is our responsibility to represent and amplify the voice of our community, where engineering and technology have a significant role to play in engineering a better world.

There is no greater challenge facing the world today than climate change.

The UNFCCC is the international organisation responsible for organising and leading the Conference of Parties (COP) event each year, as well as ongoing work and events throughout the year to advance the outcomes from a COP.

COP28 took place in Dubai in December 2023, following COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2022 and COP26 in Glasgow in 2021.

As a professional engineering organisation and charity, we applied for and were granted, NGO observer status to the COP process in 2021.

This allowed us to send delegates to COP28, COP27 and COP26, to understand what was happening at the events, outside of the broader media headlines, and what this meant for the engineering community.

Raising the profile of engineering skills at COP28

The IET held a number of events and presentations at COP28 to launch our International Green Skills Survey and bring the engineering skills for net zero conversation to the global stage.

For COP27, the focus was very much on mitigation, finance and adaptation.

Our delegates were fortunate to attend many key events at COP27 and get involved in conversations with some influential climate change leaders. They describe their experiences and thoughts on the conference in a short summary.
