The Electrical Age Journal

Discover The Electrical Age journal (later Electric Living) published by the Electrical Association for Women from 1926-1986.

The Electrical Age was the journal produced by the Electrical Association for Women from 1926 to 1986. From 1978 it was renamed Electric Living. The complete set of journals have been digitised and available to view via the links below.

The journals contain information on domestic electricity, home design, housecraft, work carried out by individuals and the local branches to inform and educate consumers. It covers a wealth of social history as well as engineering innovation in the UK over a 60-year period of huge technical development.

In addition to the technical articles, there are news items, and papers written for those without an engineering background thus making them easily accessible to a wide audience.

The abundant advertisements also offer the opportunity to discover how electricity was perceived and marketed. The journal’s first editor was Dame Caroline Haslett.

The Electrical Age journal was unique in its aim, to interpret the message of electricity to the women of the UK. Due to the EAW’s rapid expansion a means to express its point of view and to report on its many activities was imperative.

As part of the EAW’s centenary celebrations the IET Archives has digitised all volumes of The Electrical Age to allow future generations to access these important records. Each volume has been scanned and combined into easily accessible PDFs.
