How to make the most of career fairs

Before

  • Check out the guide, which will list all the companies attending. Pick out the people you’d most like to speak to and research the companies so you’ll be ready to discuss the company’s core services.
  • Dress smartly, but wear comfy shoes, you’ll be on your feet for a while.
  • Master your elevator pitch - a two-minute (maximum) response to the recruiter question: ‘tell me about yourself’.
  • Print copies of your CV that show off your strong points. And if you have business cards, take them along too.
  • Prepare a pen and pad to make notes, and don’t forget your phone for taking photos of contact details from brochures and leaflets.

During

  • Use a highlighter to mark the places you want to visit on a map of the floor plan.
  • Treat the day like a job interview, behave professionally and show interest and enthusiasm when talking to recruiters.
  • Even if you’re feeling nervous, always smile and offer a firm handshake.
  • Collect business cards from the people you’ve chatted to at the stands.

After

  • A few days after the event, send emails to the recruiters who really stuck in your mind and let them know that you’d really like to work with them. If you find them on LinkedIn, try to connect with them there also.
