Gaining professional registration as a Royal Engineer

Which criteria are right for me?

Direct Entry Officer
  • have an engineering first degree (BEng/MEng) or, exceptionally and with the agreement of each of the Royal Engineers and the IET, an alternative degree
  • completed the Professional Engineering Training course and the MSc in Military Construction Engineering
Garrison Engineer
  • can demonstrate CEng competence, including underpinning knowledge, through sufficient time in a Technical Engineering Appointment as a Garrison Engineer.
We believe in the value of experience as well as education.

That’s why they’ll consider your application if you don’t meet the above requirements but can prove you have the same level of knowledge and understanding.

Garrison Engineer
  • can demonstrate competence (e.g. through the Clerk of Works course and sufficient time in Technical Engineering Appointment as a Garrison Engineer)
  • meet the UK&U Requirements
  • have the academic qualifications as per EngC UK-SPEC
Clerk of Works
  • can demonstrate competence (e.g. through Clerk of Works course and completion of a linked Bachelor's Top-Up Degree and sufficient time in a Technical Engineering Appointment as a Clerk of Works)
  • meet the UK&U Requirements
  • have the academic qualifications as per EngC UK-SPEC

Achieved NVQ L3 (electrical or mechanical), or a suitable qualification at QCF3

The current year’s annual membership and professional registration fees for Armed Forces members as well as the latest Engineering Council fees.

How do I apply?

Check your eligibility using the criteria above and then complete the DERS application form.

Good to know

  • You need to be a member of the IET before applying.
  • Military/MOD computers might have trouble downloading the application pack. If you have any problems please email armedforces@theiet.org.
  • All military personnel are also able to apply via the standard route of application, providing you meet the Engineering Council requirements.
  • Applications must be endorsed before submitting to the IET.
