Professional registration as a weapons engineer

Which criteria are right for me?

Hold the substantive rank of Warrant Officer, and:
  1. have completed an assignment as a WOET(WE) in a technical WO sea-going position, or assignment holding similar levels of responsibility, and
  2. have completed a Technical Engineering assignment in the substantive rank post completion of the above role.
OR
Hold the substantive rank of Lieutenant or above, and:
  1. have completed a Deputy Weapons Engineering Officer (DWEO) post or appointment holding similar levels of responsibility and passed the Weapons Charge Qualification (WCQ) and
  2. have completed a Technical Engineering Appointment in the substantive rank post completion of the role above.
Plus:
  • An appropriate Masters’ degree or Engineering Doctorate (EngD) accredited by a professional engineering institution, or appropriate further learning to Masters level such as an accredited integrated MEng degree or MSc or
  • Provide evidence of the same level of knowledge and understanding as above. Examples of training and experience leading to the same level of personal technical contribution are required. This evidence will need to be approved by IET before the Scheme can be used.

Hold the substantive rank of at least:
  • Petty Officer (Engineering Technician) (Weapons/Sensors/CIS); having completed the Petty Officer (Engineering Technician) WE Career Course (WE315 or WE316), and achieved either Chief Petty Officer Professional Qualifying Examination (CPOPQE) [legacy] or passed the Professional Examination (PE) for promotion to Chief Petty Officer (Engineering Technician) [ICF].
OR
Hold the substantive rank of at least:
  • Sub-Lieutenant; having been appointed as a Deputy Weapon Engineering Officer (DWEO) and having achieved Weapons Charge Qualification (WCQ).
Plus
  • An appropriate Bachelors’ degree or above in engineering or technology. A degree accredited by the Engineering Council is preferred, but most reputable Bachelors’ degrees in engineering or technology are acceptable or
  • A Bachelors' degree or above in Science, Physics or Maths, and successful completion of WE Systems Engineer’s Management Course Phase 1 or
  • A Higher National Certificate or Diploma or a Foundation Degree in engineering or technology, plus evidence of appropriate additional learning, including work-based learning such as WE Systems Engineer’s Management Course Phase 1.

EngTech/ICTTech - expand to view the relevant criteria

  • hold an NVQ L3 qualification in their trade or a suitable qualification at QCF3 (or SCQF or EQF equivalent) or above or have passed LET(WE) CIS Spec Career Course (for ICTTech), and
  • Provide sufficient evidence of competence (in the application form) to identify the maintenance and/or development of competence as laid down in the relevant standard of competence since award of qualification(s).

Good to know

  • You need to be a member of the IET before applying.
  • Military/MOD computers might have trouble downloading the application pack. If you have any problems please email armedforces@theiet.org
  • All military personnel are also able to apply via the standard route of application, providing you meet the Engineering Council requirements.
  • Applications must be endorsed before submitting to the IET.
