IET Library - frequently asked questions

Library loans and renewals

All members, including student members, can borrow books. We even offer a free postal service for members who can’t visit the reading room but you’ll have to pay the postage for returning the books. Members of other engineering bodies can use our library, just contact us to let us now and have your membership number to hand.

What digital resources are available in the library?

The library offers a range of digital resources, including eBooks, eJournals, standards, articles, and business information. These are free, online and 24/7, to all IET Members globally, and primarily powered by EBSCOhost.com

The following can be accessed from IET London: Savoy Place – British Standards, IEEExplore, Ancestry, Inspec and the IET Digital Library. For remote access options, contact the library.

How can I find relevant resources in the library?

To search print and digital books and journals, use our main library catalogue.

To search just digital resources, including eBooks, eJournals and articles, use our dedicated search tool: EBSCO Discovery Service. You can also browse our digital resources by type:

Additionally, we create themed monthly reading lists to help you find relevant materials for your research and to introduce you to our collections, and IET Members also benefit from free assistance with research and using our collections via our research and document supply services.

How do I access the library’s digital resources remotely?

You must be an IET member or library only member.

Simply register on the IET website with your IET membership number, and use those login details whenever accessing the library’s digital resources on EBSCOhost.com.

If you are having difficulties logging in, see the single sign-on FAQs or contact the library.

For standards and any other digital resources, contact the library.

Why am I being asked to register with EBSCO when I already logged in with my IET login details?

When you first access the library’s digital resources on EBSCO, you may be offered to create a ‘personal user account’. This is powered by EBSCO and optional, allowing you to save searches, articles, book chapters and more for later.

After setting your preferences, you will automatically go to the resource you selected. In future, continue to use your IET login details to access our digital resources.

What is the difference between the IET Library and the IET Digital Library?

The IET Library provides print and digital resources from a range of publishers to meet the information needs of the engineering community and to help IET members of all categories with their professional development and research needs.

The IET Digital Library provides online full-text access to journals, books and conferences published by the IET. IET members can gain some offsite access by using their knowledge pack credits.

How can I get further assistance in using the library?
