My story - Don Hunter oral history interview

Don Hunter, 2015

Arthur Donald (Don) Hunter was born in 1926 in Berkshire, United Kingdom.

At age 16 he left school, to join the IEE (now the IET) on a school leaver recruitment programme.

In 1943 he commenced his employment as a Trainee Junior Clerk.

This involved rotating through the departments to find out where he was best suited and this resulted in a position in the Subscriptions Department of the Finance Office.

In 1956 Don enrolled on a part-time evening course at the London School of Economics where he graduated with a BSc Econ in 1961.

In 1958 Don was appointed Assistant Accountant and by 1962 was promoted to Chief Accountant.

In the early 1960s, Don was the IEE Finance Director.

During this time Don remembers that the IEE went through considerable changes with activities focused on increasing income and the membership growing rapidly.

Don oversaw the computerisation of the IEE with new machines installed in the basement at Savoy Place, London. He also contributed to the development of INSPEC.

During the 1970s Don led the move from the Finance Department from Savoy Place to Hitchin.

Don retired in 1988.
