Professor George Williamson

Since graduating in 1977 George worked in science, engineering and technology over many years working with many great people from industry and academia and he is keen to help others benefit from that experience where he can.

After a PhD in plasma physics related to the fusion efforts he entered the telecommunications sector and with 26 years in BT’s R&D organisations and 8 years at Openreach. At BT he had a varied corporate career with roles spanning digital switching (System X), artificial intelligence, IT, Network Management, OSS, Intelligent Networking, Broadband (xDSL) and at Openreach fixed and wireless access networks. Leaving Openreach in 2014 he moved on to consulting for 8 years working as an independent consultant for telecommunications operators, investors, equipment vendors, consulting firms and others.

George was formerly Chief Engineer of Openreach with a key role as CTO for Openreach’s Next Generation Access programme and responsibility for the Openreach Access Network Strategy.

George is an experienced engineering professional now interested in providing helpful advice and support to individuals and organisations.

Since 2023 he has been developing a portfolio of interesting voluntary activities.

George works with the University of Salford helping to put technology into context for students.

He is also very active with the IET organising a large number of events for members and the public and also with the ITP and Ipswich Academy he mentors younger people on careers in telecoms and STEM subjects.
